Security Council
The Security Council is the United Nations' most powerful body, with "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security." Five powerful countries sit as "permanent members" along with ten elected members with two-year terms.
Dear delegates, welcome to the 12th Edition of the Washington Academy Model of United Nations. The Security Council's responsibility is to keep worldwide peace and security. This committee meets in vital times, and in this ever-changing background this committee will never be short of disputes and heated discussions. I cannot encourage you more to research past this booklet, in order to make the most out of this three-day MUN experience.
I must congratulate you for taking the courage to participate in an event as such. Always remember, especially in today’s situation, howfortunate we are to have an opportunity like this in front of us. I have witnessed the huge impact that MUN experiences have on certain delegates, and I must tell you: it’s absolutely astonishing. By taking us out of our comfort zone, they push us to limits we never knew we were capable of reaching. I myself have been attending MUN’s as a delegate since I was a high school freshman, and believe me when I tell you: your public speaking skills will rocket-improve if you allow yourself to participate in as many MUNs as you can throughout high school. You will learn to defend a point of view (even if it radically contradicts yours) with solid arguments, and to respond quickly yet
concretely to tough questions. Hopefully, you will address problems with a more open-minded approach and learn the importance of tolerance especially regarding international disputes.
This booklet will not only help you and provide you information on the topics, but also guide you into the correct way to approach the topics. Nevertheless, we encourage you to conduct further research on the topics, since the best delegates are the ones better prepared. We will provide you links that you can consult for further information. With nothing more to add, we hope this experience will be as fulfilling as it will be for us.
Sincerely,
Manuel Gomez
