Dear delegates, we gladly welcome you to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), in the 12th edition of WAMUN. The Economic and Social Council has served since 1946 as one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, and has made its main goal to ensure sustainable development worldwide. Therefore, ECOSOC is the principal UN body for coordination, policy review and implementation of international development goals; as well as recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues.
The topics up for debate are both complex and challenging, and it is in your power to reach solutions that work with the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. In this edition, ECOSOC will debate two recent issues with an extent of severe consequences on a global scale: the effects of Brexit, and Genetically Modified Organisms as a means of ending world hunger. The booklets provided on both topics will serve as the first step to get ahead in your investigation and understand what is expected of you as a delegate. However we strongly encourage you research past this booklet.
We are very glad that you decided to join this committee and we are looking forward to assist and guide you as your staff members during the entire debate. My name is Elena Báez, and I will serve as your chair in this edition of WAMUN, alongside Claudio Bastiani as your co-chair and Marcelo Camilli as your secretary. We are eager to meet all of you and see you engage in rich, dynamic debates as you use your skills to develop strong arguments and arrive to viable solutions. We hope that you make the most out of this wonderful experience at WAMUN.
