Welcome delegates to the Disarmament and International security committee of the Washington Academy Model of United Nations 2016. It’s a pleasure for me to have you form part of this experience. DISEC, also known as the first committee, is one of the six main committees of the United Nations and treats topics such as promotion of cooperative arrangements, regulations of armaments and threats to peace of the international community. The main objective of delegates is to work out solutions to challenges in the international security and be able to strengthen stability between countries. Some distinctive documents the DISEC committee has produced over the years include the Resolution 1 (London 1946) and the Resolution  1378.

It is my honor to welcome you to this committee. My name   is Valentina Castro and I will be your chair this year, along with Rafael Paladino as your co-chair and Roberto Gonçalves as your secretary. I myself have participated in numerous models,  including school such as Instituto Cumbres de Caracas, Los Arcos and Academia Merici. For ICCMUN 2016 I was able to be co- chair in the Human Rights committee. It was a wonderful experience in which I learned a lot and I’m thrilled to apply my knowledge in this model. This booklet will not only help you and provide you information on the topics, but also guide you into the correct way to approach the topics. Nevertheless, we encourage you to conduct further research on the topics, since the best delegates are the ones better prepared.
